Caring for Aging Parents in Paramus NJ
In Paramus, separate three decisions that families often bundle together: where your parent wants to go, which ride actually serves that destination, and whether the children should join. The borough’s senior bus and two library locations provide useful starting points. They work best as choices, not as a single ambitious afternoon itinerary.

Choose the library location before the activity
Paramus Public Library lists its main library at 116 East Century Road and the Charles E. Reid Branch at 239 West Midland Avenue. When another relative offers to meet your parent, put the full location in the message. Saying only “the Paramus library” leaves an avoidable ambiguity.
The library advertises museum-pass borrowing, ebooks and audiobooks. A library visit can be the outing itself; a museum pass is an option for a different day after you have checked the borrowing conditions. For a parent who would rather stay home after an appointment, ask about digital borrowing instead of treating a canceled outing as a lost opportunity.
The borough’s Senior Center FAQ says membership is for Paramus residents age 62 or older. This makes the center another possible destination for your parent, but not an all-ages substitute for a family outing. Ask for current activities and choose something your parent would attend even if you were not there.
A scheduled shopping bus is not an unrestricted ride
The municipal Senior Bus Transportation page describes a set schedule serving Paramus malls, shopping centers, food stores and the Senior Citizen Building. It lists Senior Busing at 201-649-0738 and says scheduling is handled through Public Works. Ask which trip actually fits the destination rather than interpreting “senior bus” as transportation anywhere on request.
If you are trying to coordinate a medical appointment, verify that journey separately. Bergen County Community Transportation, 201-368-5955, is a public contact for scheduled transportation questions. Tell the dispatcher the exact office address and whether someone must travel with your parent. Do not assume the local shopping schedule covers a clinical visit.
Look beyond an activity calendar
Bergen County Division of Senior Services assists caregivers as well as older adults at 201-336-7400. If your parent has begun missing meals, forgetting arrangements or depending on you for every errand, describe those changes. A center activity may help with connection, but the county conversation can address the broader support question.
Your-week plan
First, choose the library building and let your parent pick whether to browse, collect materials or investigate a future program. Keep the children’s participation optional rather than expecting everyone to enjoy the same activity.
Next, call Senior Busing about one practical trip your parent would otherwise ask you to drive. Keep the confirmed details beside the school calendar. Review whether the arrangement truly reduced your workload or simply moved it into a different part of the day.
