Bergen Help for Family Caregivers
If you are coordinating a parent while raising children, the problem may be the combination rather than any one task. One more appointment can consume the only hour available for school pickup or paid work. Bergen's information and assistance service is a practical starting point for explaining that overlap and asking what support might address it.

Call with a description of the week
Bergen County Division of Senior Services lists 201-336-7400. Its information and assistance team serves older adults, adults with disabilities and caregivers, and describes help with caregiver support, transportation, housing information and care management referrals.
Tell the team where your parent lives and when another adult is needed. Explain whether you live together and whether the parent wants you involved in service discussions. Ask how consent should be handled. A focused request, such as help during the interval between school dismissal and dinner, is more actionable than saying that the entire week is impossible.
Get travel advice before assuming a ride
The county's Ride Connect flyer describes trip planning for Bergen residents aged 60 and over and lists 201-368-5955. It is designed to help identify options, including county, municipal and other transportation. Confirm current contact hours and the actual provider for the proposed journey.
Ask about eligibility, reservations, assistance and the return trip. Then decide whether your parent needs another adult inside the appointment. A transport arrangement is not necessarily a supervision arrangement. If the parent can travel independently, a successful ride may free a meaningful work block; if not, the remaining support needs must be planned separately.
Ask which kind of respite fits
The Statewide Respite Care Program provides periodic or short-term relief for unpaid caregivers. The state describes functional-need certification, financial criteria and other conditions, including restrictions involving participation in certain other programs. Ask Bergen's team about screening and alternatives rather than treating it as guaranteed coverage.
Describe what a helper must actually do and whether the need is daytime, evening or overnight. Discuss your parent's preferences and how a handover would work. Keep children out of responsibility for monitoring care. They can read, talk and spend time with their grandparent without being the reason an adult care arrangement is considered safe.
Make the work conversation current
If care for your parent’s serious health condition affects work, consult the current official New Jersey leave guidance and the separate family-leave guide. Keep the local support request specific: which task needs another adult, and during which hours?
The same changes added job protection under TDI/FLI law for benefit recipients when the leave is not already covered under NJFLA or the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), without minimum current-employer size or work-history requirements. Benefits eligibility still depends on earnings and program rules. Ask about your circumstances, document communications and avoid older blanket claims that FLI offers no job protection.
